Kerry Golf FAQ

Everything you need to plan your Kerry golf break

Kerry's standout courses are Old Head Golf Links (ranked in the world's top 10 for its cliff-top drama), Ballybunion Old Course (Tom Watson's favourite links in the world), and Waterville Golf Links (a remote masterpiece on the Ring of Kerry). Tralee Golf Club, designed by Arnold Palmer, rounds out the must-play quartet. For parkland golf, Killarney's Killeen and Mahony's Point courses offer a gentler but equally stunning alternative.
Green fees in Kerry range from €25 at Castlegregory Golf Links to €395 at Old Head. The flagship courses — Ballybunion Old (€200–€250), Waterville (€195–€250) and Tralee (€150–€200) — command premium rates that reflect their world standing. Excellent value rounds can be found at Dooks (€55–€80), Ring of Kerry (€45–€65), Ceann Sibéal (€45–€65) and Kenmare (€35–€50). Killarney's two parkland courses offer superb quality at €80–€100.
Kerry golf is playable year-round thanks to the Gulf Stream, which moderates temperatures even in winter. The peak season runs from May to September when daylight hours are longest and conditions most reliable. June and September are particularly favoured — green fees are lower in September than peak July/August, yet conditions remain excellent. Spring (April–May) offers fresh course conditions after winter rains. The links courses play best when the ground is firm and fast, typically from June onwards.
Old Head Golf Links requires a handicap certificate (men 28 and under, ladies 36 and under) and advance booking. Most other Kerry courses — including Ballybunion, Waterville and Tralee — welcome visitors without a handicap requirement, though some reserve the right to request one during peak periods. It is always advisable to carry your World Handicap System (WHS) card when visiting prestigious links clubs. Courses like Dooks, Kenmare and Castlegregory have a relaxed visitor policy with no handicap requirement.
Killarney is the ideal base for most Kerry golf breaks — well-connected to Ballybunion (1 hr), Tralee (45 min), Waterville (1.5 hrs) and the Killarney courses on the doorstep. The town has excellent accommodation at all price points. For a Ballybunion-focused trip, Tralee provides good local accommodation with easy access north. Waterville Village itself has the historic Butler Arms Hotel, beloved by golfers since the 1960s. The Dingle Peninsula is best based in Dingle Town for the Ceann Sibéal and Castlegregory courses.
