About Killarney Golf & Fishing Club — Mahony's Point

Mahony's Point at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is one of Ireland's most beautiful golf courses — a parkland layout set on a promontory jutting into Lough Leane, with the snow-capped MacGillycuddy's Reeks visible to the south and the towers of Killarney's castle ruins reflected in the calm waters of the lake. The course stretches to 6,748 yards at par 72, and its final five holes along the lakeshore are among the most photographed in Irish golf.

The course was originally laid out in 1939 and subsequently refined by Henry Cotton. It plays through mature woodland and parkland, with Lough Leane coming into view and into play repeatedly on the back nine. The 18th hole — a par-3 played to a green virtually surrounded by water with the lake and mountains as a backdrop — is one of the most iconic closing holes in Irish golf and has been the backdrop for countless professional tournaments.

Mahony's Point offers the same warmth of welcome as its sister Killeen Course at green fees of €80–€100, and is available as part of a two-round day ticket. The combination of parkland serenity, spectacular lake-and-mountain scenery and genuinely excellent golf makes Killarney's Mahony's Point a must-play for any visitor to Kerry. The course suits all levels of golfer and provides a beautiful contrast to the county's many links challenges.

The 18th at Mahony's Point is a short par-3 played to a green almost entirely surrounded by Lough Leane, with the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountains behind. The combination of water, mountains and sky creates a visual tableau that has been reproduced in countless golf books and television broadcasts. It is a hole where the setting completely overwhelms the golf challenge — though missing the green is genuinely costly.
This is a genuinely debated question among golfers who know both courses well. The Killeen has the edge in terms of length and championship credentials. Mahony's Point edges ahead on sheer scenic beauty — particularly the back nine along the lakeshore. Most visitors who play both agree they are complementary rather than competing experiences and rate them very closely.
Killarney Golf Club maintains a traditional dress code appropriate to its status as one of Ireland's premier golf venues. Smart golf attire is required — no denim, tracksuits or football shirts. Soft spikes or spikeless footwear is required on both courses. The standard is relaxed but smart, and the club staff are helpful in advising visitors.
Yes — Killarney Golf Club has a fully equipped pro shop with club hire available. Buggies can also be hired on both courses. The pro shop is well stocked with equipment, clothing and accessories. Caddies are occasionally available — contact the club in advance if you require a caddie for your round.
Uniquely among major Irish golf clubs, Killarney Golf and Fishing Club also offers salmon and trout fishing on the club's stretch of the River Flesk.
