The course

Maine Valley Members Golf Club is the name given to the merged club formed when Killorglin Golf Club and Castleisland Golf Club merged their memberships in 2020. The course itself — designed by Eddie Hackett — remains at the original Killorglin site, on elevated parkland above the River Maine on the western approach to the town. As with many of Hackett's designs, it uses the natural contours of the land imaginatively and with considerable sensitivity to the scenery.

The views from the course are exceptional: Dingle Bay to the north-west, the McGillycuddy Reeks — Kerry's principal mountain range — to the south and east, and Carrauntoohill, Ireland's highest peak, visible on a clear day. It is one of the more scenic inland/parkland courses in Kerry and the position above the Ring of Kerry road makes it a natural stop on a touring golf itinerary heading either north towards Ballybunion or south towards Waterville and Kenmare.

Green fees are in the moderate range for Kerry — contact the club directly for current rates. No handicap requirement for visitors.

Frequently asked

What happened to Killorglin Golf Club?

Killorglin Golf Club merged with Castleisland Golf Club in 2020 to form Maine Valley Members Golf Club. The golf course at Killorglin remains active as the home course of the merged club. The Maine Valley name reflects the River Maine valley setting of the Killorglin site. The course continues to welcome visitors.

Who designed Maine Valley (Killorglin) Golf Club?

The course was designed by Eddie Hackett, the most prolific Irish golf course architect of the 20th century. Hackett's Kerry commissions also include Waterville, Dooks, Ring of Kerry Golf Club and Ceann Sibéal — making Maine Valley part of an impressive Hackett portfolio across the county.

What are the views like at Maine Valley?

Maine Valley sits on elevated ground above the River Maine and Killorglin town, which gives it some of the finest panoramic views of any parkland course in Kerry. On a clear day you can see Dingle Bay to the north-west, the full sweep of the McGillycuddy Reeks to the south and east, and Carrauntoohill — Ireland's highest mountain at 1,039 metres — forming a dramatic backdrop. The views are comparable to anything on the Ring of Kerry road.

How does Maine Valley fit into a Kerry golf itinerary?

Maine Valley is ideally placed as part of a Ring of Kerry or Killarney-based golf itinerary. It is 20 minutes from Killarney (pairing naturally with the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club courses), 15 minutes from Dooks Links, and 25 minutes from Tralee. For golfers driving the Ring of Kerry towards Waterville, Kenmare or Dooks, it is a natural morning or afternoon round on the way.

Is a handicap required at Maine Valley?

No — Maine Valley welcomes visitors of all standards without a handicap certificate requirement. This makes it accessible to golfers of mixed ability in a group, and an easier addition to a tour itinerary that might also include handicap-required courses such as Ballybunion or Dooks.
