About Ballybunion Cashen Course

The Cashen Course at Ballybunion Golf Club was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1984. Built across some of the most extreme duneland in Ireland — arguably more dramatic topographically than the adjacent Old Course — the Cashen presents a links challenge of an entirely different character. Where the Old is a masterpiece of routing and history, the Cashen is wilder, more elemental and, for many players, more punishing.

Robert Trent Jones Sr. was given arguably the most spectacular raw material of his distinguished career when he surveyed the Cashen dunes in the late 1970s. The course traverses deep valleys between towering sand ridges, presenting carries and blind shots that demand both boldness and precision. Some holes play from elevated tees across near-vertical drops; others require lengthy approach shots with the wind howling off the Atlantic. The course measures 6,306 yards from the medal tees at a par of 72.

The Cashen is included in a combined day ticket with the Old Course, making Ballybunion one of the few clubs in Ireland where a genuine 36-hole day is a realistic and immensely rewarding option. Green fees for the Cashen alone run from €80 to €100. Advance booking is recommended, particularly during the summer months when demand from international golf tourists is at its peak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need before you play Ballybunion Cashen Course

The two courses at Ballybunion are very different experiences. The Old is a seasoned classic with over 130 years of history, renowned for its routing through the dunes and its iconic cemetery hole. The Cashen is Robert Trent Jones's more modern interpretation of the same duneland — rawer, more extreme in its terrain changes, and arguably harder. Both are exceptional; together they make Ballybunion one of the world's great two-course venues.
The Cashen Course is challenging for all levels of golfer due to its extreme terrain changes and exposure to Atlantic winds. High handicappers can absolutely enjoy the round, but should be prepared for a demanding test. Taking a more relaxed approach to scoring and focusing on the extraordinary surroundings will make for an enjoyable experience regardless of handicap.
Yes — the Cashen can be booked independently at €80–€100 per round. It is also available as part of a combined 36-hole day ticket with the Old Course, which offers a discounted rate. Contact Ballybunion Golf Club directly or use the GolfNow booking link to check current availability and pricing.
The Cashen Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the celebrated American golf architect responsible for some of the world's most revered courses including Ballybunion, Spyglass Hill and the celebrated Atlantic design at Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico. Jones considered the Cashen dunes some of the finest raw materials he ever worked with.
Ballybunion Golf Club has an excellent clubhouse serving the Old and Cashen courses. The clubhouse includes a well-stocked pro shop, bar and restaurant with panoramic views, changing facilities, and a practice area. The club is welcoming to visiting golfers and the staff are knowledgeable about both courses.
