About Waterville Golf Links

Waterville Golf Links is one of golf's great hidden masterpieces — a remote, wind-swept links on the Iveragh Peninsula that has captivated visitors since its modern layout was established in the 1970s. Set between the Atlantic Ocean and Ballinskelligs Bay, with the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountains visible to the north and east, the setting is among the most scenically dramatic in world golf. The course stretches to 7,225 yards from the championship tees at a par of 72.

The modern Waterville layout owes much to Club Captain John A. Mulcahy, an Irish-American businessman who purchased the club in 1972 and commissioned American architect Eddie Hackett to create a championship layout from the raw links terrain. Hackett's routing, later refined by Tom Fazio, produced a course of genuine world class — one that ranked in the global top 30 for many years and continues to draw pilgrims from across the golfing world. The 17th hole, 'Mulcahy's Peak', is particularly celebrated — a par-3 playing to a hilltop green with 360-degree coastal views.

Waterville was a favourite haunt of Payne Stewart, Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia during the American PGA Tour's pre-Open Ireland trips, cementing its reputation among the world's elite golfers. Visitors are warmly welcomed throughout the season, with green fees of €195–€250. The adjacent Butler Arms Hotel has hosted generations of golf tourists and remains the natural base for a Waterville stay. No handicap certificate is required for most visitor slots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need before you play Waterville Golf Links

Waterville stands apart for the combination of its remote setting, the quality of its links terrain and the sheer ambition of its routing. Few courses in the world offer the sense of isolation and raw natural beauty that Waterville provides. The 17th hole — a par-3 from an elevated tee with panoramic views of the Atlantic, mountains and coastline — is one of the most memorable holes in Irish golf.
Waterville generally does not require a handicap certificate from visitors, though the club may request one during peak summer periods. Carrying your WHS handicap card is always recommended when visiting top-tier links clubs. The course suits experienced golfers — the length and wind exposure make it genuinely demanding for high handicappers.
The Butler Arms Hotel in Waterville village is the traditional choice — it has welcomed generations of golf tourists and is just minutes from the first tee. The hotel has strong ties to Waterville Golf Links and can often assist with booking tee times. The Ring of Kerry Hotel in Kenmare is another popular base for golfers combining Waterville with other south Kerry courses.
Absolutely. A classic south Kerry golf itinerary combines Waterville with Old Head (a 90-minute drive via the scenic coastal road), Dooks Golf Links on the northern shore of Dingle Bay, and Kenmare Golf Club. Killarney's courses are 90 minutes east and can be incorporated into a longer break. The Ring of Kerry scenery between courses is as much an attraction as the golf itself.
At 7,225 yards from the tips, Waterville is a genuinely long golf course by any measure. However, the prevailing south-westerly wind is frequently at golfers' backs on the outward nine, making some holes play shorter than their yardage suggests. The return nine, playing into the wind, is a serious examination of iron play and course management. The course plays differently on every visit depending on wind direction and strength.
