About Tralee Golf Club

Tralee Golf Club, designed by Arnold Palmer and opened in 1984, occupies one of the most stunning links settings in Ireland — a rugged peninsula north of Tralee town where the Atlantic coast of Kerry meets the Brandon Mountain range. Palmer, who described the site as 'the most beautiful I have ever seen', created a course that embraces its dramatic natural surroundings with holes carved from genuine duneland, along cliff edges and through ancient castle ruins.

The course divides neatly into two contrasting halves. The outward nine plays through more gentle links terrain, building in quality and drama before the turn. The inward nine is among the most spectacular in Ireland — holes 13 through to 16 play across cliff edges and ravines with the full force of the Atlantic visible below. The 17th, a short par-3 played across a chasm with no bail-out option, is one of the most photographed holes in world golf. The castle ruins on the 14th and 15th holes add a layer of historical theatre unmatched anywhere.

Tralee welcomes visitors throughout the year at green fees of €150–€200, making it more accessible than Old Head or Ballybunion while delivering a genuinely world-class experience. No handicap certificate is required for most visitor slots. The clubhouse offers excellent food and a comprehensive pro shop. Tralee town, just 20 minutes away, provides a wide range of accommodation options making it an ideal base for a multi-course Kerry golf break.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need before you play Tralee Golf Club

Tralee Golf Club was designed by Arnold Palmer — one of golf's all-time greats and a highly regarded course architect. Palmer surveyed the site in the 1970s and reportedly called it the most beautiful he had ever seen. He created a layout that maximises the natural drama of the headland setting, particularly on the back nine where cliff-top holes provide some of the most visually arresting golf in Ireland.
Tralee is a challenging links course, particularly in wind, but it is entirely manageable for golfers of all handicap levels who approach it with the right mindset. The front nine is more forgiving, while the back nine's cliff-top holes require commitment and accuracy. The length of 6,991 yards from the tips can be reduced by playing from shorter tees. Most visitors find it an exhilarating rather than punishing experience.
Opinion divides between the 17th and the closing run of holes on the back nine. The 17th is a short par-3 of 167 yards played across a ravine to a green perched on the cliff edge — miss the green in the wrong direction and your ball disappears to the rocks below. The 14th and 15th, played around the ruins of an ancient castle, are equally memorable for different reasons.
Advance booking is strongly recommended at Tralee, particularly from May through September. The club is popular with international visitors throughout the season and weekend tee times book up months in advance. Mid-week slots are more readily available. The GolfNow booking system or direct contact with the club are both reliable booking channels.
Tralee town offers the widest range of accommodation options — from the Ballyroe Heights Hotel to numerous quality B&Bs. The Barrow (4km from the club) has self-catering cottages popular with golf groups. Listowel and Ballybunion also offer good accommodation for golfers planning to play multiple north Kerry courses in the same trip.
